How to be a Luminary Leader: Part One

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” – Ronald Reagan

I recall how as a three-year-old, I would stand outside and gaze up at the night sky, holding onto my father’s hand.

“Look, Disy. A shooting star. Make a wish.”

While my father pointed upwards, I watched on in wonder at the brilliance of the dying star as it arced across the constellations. That Disneyesque luminescence stirred my soul, beckoning me to reach for the stars and believe dreams do come true—and I did just that. Little did I know that my fascination with the stars and their illuminating presence would lead to my Luminary Leader’s methodology.

Humans have long been fascinated by the night sky. The simple act of lifting our eyes triggers our brain to try and access lost or hidden information because it causes the production of alpha waves in the brain. Our skywards gaze whether it be into the forest canopy, marvelling at towering architecture or enjoying the night sky activates areas of the brain, encouraging us to reach beyond the bounds of time and space expanding our thinking into the realms of possibilities.

I discovered during my 40+years in leadership, that when we Look up, Light up and LEAD, we trigger a neurological cascade effect where we can Clarify, Calibrate, and Create results unexpected in common hours. The more we Dare to Shine like those stars in the night sky, the brighter, bigger, and bolder we become, illuminating our pathway to success.

How to Become a Luminary Leader is a call to ascend from the leadership models of the past to the echelon of Luminary Leadership, guiding teams from the quagmire of earth-bound limitations toward an enlightened, prosperous future.

Grounded in the eight foundational pillars, the Luminary Leadership framework serves as a navigational compass, offering actionable insights and strategic guidance.

Here’s a sneak peek into the first four foundational pillars of Luminary Leadership, each one a gem of wisdom to light up your path to becoming a Luminary Leader.

Look, Listen, Lean in, and LEARN.

In the corporate ecosystem, the mechanism of organizational learning is fundamentally underpinned by individual employees who not only engage in continuous learning but also harbor a passion for the process. Luminary Leaders epitomize this ethos, embodying a commitment to perpetual education that permeates their team cultures. Through substantial investments in both time and capital toward self-improvement, they generate intrinsic and extrinsic value for themselves and their stakeholders.

Attributes of Luminary Leadership include:

  • Employing elevated problem-solving techniques for strategic decision-making
  • Utilizing an amalgamation of intuitive intelligence and empirical rationale
  • Exercising discernment over discrimination in the evaluative process
  • Mastering a repertoire of 27 quintessential competencies fundamental to C-suite effectiveness

Luminary Leaders resonate with the Socratic paradox, which posits: “The more I know, the more I realize I know nothing.”

This acknowledgment serves as an intellectual cornerstone, fostering an environment of humility and relentless quest for knowledge.

UNLEARN everything that doesn’t serve you or lights you up.

The imperative to unlearn restrictive human viewpoints and gain mastery over one’s cognitive processes—characterized by approximately 60,000 daily thoughts—is paramount for achieving Luminary Leadership. This begins with the rudimentary yet pivotal practice of mindfulness and self-awareness.

Luminary Leaders attain a heightened state of cognizance concerning their thought patterns, belief systems, limitations, and behavioural tendencies. They recognize the intricate interplay between mental, physical, and energetic realms, and subsequently deploy a robust arsenal of tools aimed at fostering personal transformation.

Leveraging cutting-edge advancements in neuroscience and neurobiology, Luminary Leaders proactively undertake a conscious and methodical recalibration of their neural architecture. This enables them to exercise leadership marked by unequivocal assurance, inventive problem-solving, and an amplified fiduciary responsibility toward their teams, peers, and broader stakeholder community.

MASTER yourself first.

The third pillar elucidates a fundamental oversight commonly encountered at the inception of a leadership trajectory: the underestimation of self-mastery as a prerequisite for effective leadership. As explained by Albert Einstein, true mastery necessitates a comprehensive devotion of one’s intellectual and emotional resources to the designated cause.

It is only through an unwavering commitment to self-mastery that one can unlock the attendant benefits of leadership, organizational prosperity, individual fulfillment, and sustained team allegiance.

Such a level of expertise serves as a catalyst, galvanizing teams to transcend conventional limitations and cultivate a culture of luminary thinking within the organization. This synergetic environment amplifies collective energy levels and promotes a higher degree of skill proficiency.

As substantiated by Dr. K. Anders Ericsson’s empirical research, the attainment of this calibre of mastery is a longitudinal endeavour, requiring a minimum investment of 10,000 hours to achieve subject-matter expertise.

Therefore, leadership is not a short-term commitment but a prolonged engagement, demanding sustained effort and focus over an extended period.

IGNITE your spark to INSPIRE others.

As we activate and establish novel neural pathways within our cerebral architecture, we transition into a state of self-sustained inspiration. This shift enables us to reclaim our individual agency, unlock latent capabilities, and transmute acquired knowledge into actionable wisdom and raw data into focused intentions. Under these conditions, the conventional paradigms of self-motivation and managerial oversight become superfluous.

Armed with this elevated degree of leadership acumen, Luminary Leaders operate within a framework marked by augmented emotional intelligence, enhanced forbearance, and a heightened sense of gratitude. They not only identify but also duly acknowledge the unique competencies, gifts, and talents of their team members, appreciating their integral role in the aggregate success of the organization.

Luminary Leaders operate under the precept that individuals perform optimally given the information and resources available to them at any given moment. Hence, for collective performance to transcend current thresholds, the onus resides with the leader to act as the catalyst, inspiring and mobilizing team members towards actionable outcomes.

That’s brings us to the end of Part One of our Luminary Leadership series! Next month, we’ll dive deeper with more transformative pillars that promise to elevate your leadership game. Until then, start putting these first four pillars into practice and see where they lead you.

Wishing you all an illuminating journey ahead! ✨
